Kazi Nazrul Islam was born on 24 May



The national poet of Bangladesh Kazi Nazrul Islam was born on 24 May 1899 at Churulia, a small village in the district of Bordhoman of West Bengal, in a Kazi (Judge) family. This family came to Bengal for living from Bihar. Nazrul’s father was an Imam. Nazrul was one of the many of his siblings. As his family was poverty-stricken, he was named after Dukhu Mia (sad man).

Nazrul grew up in his birthplace Churulia. His education was started in a Moktob (Religious Institution), but at the age of eight, the abrupt death of his father made him work in a Mazar. Soon he joined the traveling folklore band known as Leto. Nazrul’s student life did not succeed due to poverty. Although he was a brilliant student he decided to quit school.



At the time of world war one, the Bengali youths were called to join the British army through posters. Nazrul was inspired by those and write down his name in 49th Bengal Regiment.

He did not participate in active fighting but he continued his practice of Farsi language when he was posted to Nousera and Karachi.

In 1919 Nazrul’s first writing ‘’Baunduler Atmakahini” was published in a liberal newspaper. After that many of Nazrul’s poems were published in “Bongio Muslim Sahitto Pottrica” among the poems one named “Muktti” was his first published poem.
