Nazrul’s contribution to the liberation war of Bangladesh


Nazrul witnessed several rebellions one after another – two World Wars, Khilafat and Shafaj movements, Non-cooperation movement of Mahatma Gandhi. The tremendous senses of these movements turned him into a rebel. As the great poet Shelly and Byron were inspired by the ideals of the French Revolution, Nazrul was inspired by these movements.

His poetry stands as a mouthpiece of the whole humankind. He wrote poetry not as a source of pleasure, but as a weapon for emancipation and against oppression. Like Shelly, he moves his audience emotionally and awakes the inner feelings of people.

“Kandari Hushiar” along with other spirited poems and songs of Nazrul played a great role during the nine months’ struggle for the independence of Bangladesh. Nazrul's songs were repeatedly sung through the “Shadin Bangla Beter Kendra” during the period of freedom fighting in 1971. One of them was “Notuner Gann”, which was highly inspiring. It reads,
