Influence of socialism in Nazrul’s poetry

Image
We can find the trace of the influence of the Communist ideals in Nazrul’s poem “Samyabadi” which he wrote in 1925. The spread of communism from country to country in that time inspired him to write his poems on equality. Nazrul was a keen observer of the non-cooperation movement of Mahatma Gandhi in 1920-22 and the movement of self –Government by Deshabadhu Chittaranjan Das. This two movement also inspired him to write about equality for all both the common people and the ruler class. The message of the poem “Samyabadi” which is equality for all, is still relevant. One of the reasons of Nazrul’s relevancy in today’s society is his choice of substantial subjects as the topics of his poetry. Many of his poem Nazrul endorses religious harmony and he was very vocal about it. He raised his voice against division based on religion. He also thought that in order to get independence from the British rule, the people of the Indian subcontinent must unite regardless of the

Nazrul witnessed several rebellions one after another – two World Wars, Khilafat and Shafaj movements, Non-cooperation movement of Mahatma Gandhi. The tremendous senses of these movements turned him into a rebel. As the great poet Shelly and Byron were inspired by the ideals of the French Revolution, Nazrul was inspired by these movements. His poetry stands as a mouthpiece of the whole humankind. He wrote poetry not as a source of pleasure, but as a weapon for emancipation and against oppression. Like Shelly, he moves his audience emotionally and awakes the inner feelings of people. “Kandari Hushiar” along with other spirited poems and songs of Nazrul played a great role during the nine months’ struggle for the independence of Bangladesh. Nazrul's songs were repeatedly sung through the “Shadin Bangla Beter Kendra” during the period of freedom fighting in 1971. One of them was “ Notuner Gann”, which was highly inspiring. It reads,

Nazrul’s sense of rebellion also expressed itself in his musical compositions. Breaking all conventions he wrote on multiple musical traditions ranging from classical to folk, from Gausol to south Indian musical tradition. Nazrul was the pioneer of the Bengali Gausol music. In his songs, he used many Arabic and Fersi words. Nazrul’s Islamic songs were popularized by prominent singer Abbas Uddin Ahmed. As a result, many conservative Muslims welcomed Nazrul’s music in their society. Nazrul has a vast knowledge of music. Dipily Nag a singer of “Nazrul- Gity ” says, “It is difficult for me to cover the dimension of Nazrul’s composition. It starts from songs on nationalism, many kinds of folk song, songs on religion, songs on different situations and countries and of course on human begins.” Nazrul proved that songs could be a powerful weapon in revolutionary activity. Nazrul’s songs were a great source of inspiration, which is rare in Bengali literature .
